When talking about big data, the healthcare system is not the first thing that usually comes to mind. Most people relate big data to the technology-based company. But actually big data can be applied to various sectors in life, including healthcare. In fact, if there was only one thing that could help improve Indonesia’s healthcare system, we think it would be big data.
It still has something to do with the fact that our world is currently moving to the digital era. It’s only logical for the healthcare industry to catch up. Big data allows healthcare industry to get real-time information, which enables related parties to provide better service.
Thankfully, the Indonesian government is fully aware of this. BPJS Kesehatan, the provider of the National Health Insurance – Healthy Indonesia (JKN-KIS) program, is harnessing technology to create a better national health system to serve all Indonesian. And they are turning to big data in order to perform this digital transformation.

A digital transformation can be considered as successful if it’s targeted to the right audience. Yes, all Indonesians use BPJS, but most of its active users are actually from millennials. And as most of you know, millennials are very tech-savvy. So, BPJS decided to re-design their website become more informative and communicative. Through this website, you can access any information you need about BPJS. If you don’t have a BPJS account, and you’re interested to get one, you can even do that via the website!
Besides the website, BPJS also created multiple social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to help increase their digital presence. By being active on social media, BPJS is able to share the latest info about their programs. What’s better is that social media allows them to interact directly with their followers, thus BPJS can gather all inputs and feedbacks and use them as data to provide better service.
Mobile app to provide useful information
Besides a redesigned website, BPJS has also created a mobile app called Mobile JKN as a part of BPJS’ digital transformation. There are a lot of things you can do on the app. You can find any information about BPJS, check your membership status, find the closest public healthcare facilities, and track your bills payment. What’s more awesome is that you can even sign up as a new BPJS member if you haven’t had one.
According to the Kominfo, until today there are already more than a million users of Mobile JKN in Android version, while the iOS version has reached more than 2,000 users. Fachmi Idris, the Director of BPJS Kesehatan, is quite optimistic that the number of users will increase since Indonesia has a huge potential in the digital industry. Data shows that there are at least 100,000 people that use a smartphone in Indonesia.
Also, today’s digital world is shifted to a mobile apps usage. There are more than 92 million users that use mobile apps in Indonesia. And it also helps that today Indonesia’s population is dominated by young generations that are very tech-savvy. The decision to make a mobile app is very thoughtful. BPJS hopes that their mobile app will bring many benefits to Indonesians.
And if you already have a BPJS membership, make sure you download the Mobile JKN app on your smartphone. Prepare your BPJS card because once the app is downloaded, you will be asked to make a mobile account by submitting your BPJS card number.
Big data utilization to improve health and healthcare system
BPJS-K aims to improve the lives of Indonesians through better health care rather than make profits. They believe that big data can help them achieve this target. As most of you probably know, by using big data, a lot of companies have found ways of refining a huge amount of information they can access to make valuable products, such as targeted marketing strategy.
According to Jakarta Post, BPJS-K shares with the big data companies access to a huge volume of information that they can refine to not only improve Indonesians’ health but also provide a global public good of high-quality research to advance medical science. By the end of 2019, BPJS is projected to have the largest health care administrative database in the world. This database will have basic demographic information of patients, their medical records, diagnostic tests performed, treatments provided, and possibly some health outcome information.
There are three main ways those data can be used to improve health and healthcare system. First, BPJS-K will be able to use the data as a diagnostic tool for the health of Indonesians collectively. They can rank the burden of disease from specific conditions, both in cost to BPJS-K and the impact it places directly on patients and family. This way, resources for prevention and mitigation measure can be assigned immediately.
Second, those data will provide information to hospitals, community health center (Puskesmas), and other related facilities so that they can benchmark their performance against local, regional, and national standards. Third, BPJS-K is able to give an access to these data to researchers so they can use it to find important answers on the health issue.
Encouraging the engagement culture
With this digital transformation, it doesn’t mean BPJS will lose its human touch. In fact, BPJS continuously tries to improve its engagement culture. They have built an infrastructure to support its service, which is called Institut BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. This infrastructure is used as a platform to learn and improve the skills of its human resources.
Twice in a year, BPJS also conducts a survey to evaluate its performance as well as assess the customer satisfaction. This engagement culture program, along with the digital transformation, has successfully increased the number of BPJS active members. This year, the number increased 19% than last year. BPJS hopes that in 2021, they will have 48.6 million members registered.
BPJS has a massive job to provide health care financial coverage for all Indonesians. Right now BPJS has an insightful analysis of the wealth of data. There is much opportunity to create a great health system for all its citizens. We are really looking forward to it.
